Task: Integrate with Rika to perform additional blood-related processes it previously did not have the capabilities to perform.
The team worked with an existing TerumoBCT device, where we were responsible for expanding the capabilities of the equipment. In order to perform a specific set of therapeutic procedures, an additional module was needed. We designed all aspects of the new module, including integration of both hardware and software components following FDA standards.
My Role: Project Manager/Hardware and Systems Engineer
As project manager, I was responsible for leading the team through the project to ensure we met our deliverables and project milestones. I led communication with our industry sponsor TerumoBCT, our industry advisor, and our faculty advisors. Furthermore, I maintained, organized, and updated project documents.
I designed the device frame, brackets and undermount frame. I also developed state command protocol and integrated procedures with the existing TerumoBCT Rika device.
Implementation:
Designs were completed using Solidworks and were fabricated using a variety of manufacturing methods. We utilized manual mills, CNC machines, a press brake, and waterjets for metal components. Other components were 3D printed or assembled by hand.
